It’s November people and we’re back with the ’15 Positive Climate News From Around The World- October Edition’. From tribal women tying rakhis to trees to prevent illegal felling to China building the world’s largest wind farm, check out the climate news from different corners of the globe with countries stepping up their goals to fight against climate change. 1. Rajasthan to be the first state in India to implement green hydrogen policy
Rajasthan Industries Minister Shakuntala Rawat said on Friday that Rajasthan would be the first in the country to implement a green hydrogen policy. Jakson Green, the energy transition platform of Jakson Group, will set up a 3,65,000 tonnes per annum green hydrogen and green ammonia plant along with an integrated hybrid renewable power complex in the state’s Kota district.
2. Tribal women in Mayurbhanj, Odisha tie ‘rakhis’ to trees for protection from illegal felling and forest fires
Hundreds of acres of forestland in Mayurbhanj district of Odisha are safe today, thanks to the Jungle Raksha Bandhan Utsav organized annually by the tribal communities here. As part of the festival, they tie rakhis to the trees with a promise to protect them from felling and forest fires.
3. Wax worm saliva is found to degrade the world’s most widely used plastic
In a study published in the journal Nature Communications, researchers discovered that enzymes in the saliva of wax worms can readily degrade polyethylene, a common form of plastic used in bags and other packaging materials in a matter of hours.
4. Thailand to ban plastic scrap imports in 2025, following multiple other Asian countries
Starting in 2023, Thailand will limit the amount of imported plastic scrap based on production capacities at the plants that process the material. In 2024, only half of imports will be allowed, and the total ban will start in 2025.
5. Kuwait to develop ‘world’s most walkable’ carbon-free green city
The carbon-free green city, to be named XZERO, will be designed in the shape of a flower and aims to provide a net zero carbon lifestyle for some 100,000 residents consisting of hubs dedicated to various public facilities such as education, healthcare and entertainment.
6. PM declares Modhera (Gujarat) as India’s first solar-powered village
India’s first solar powered village is improving quality of life. Modhera in Gujarat, India has been transforming thousands of residents’ lives after a solar project commissioned in 2021 has provided more than enough renewable energy to power the community. The project cost €8.3 million for 1,300 homes, and could save residents between 60-100% on electricity bills as they produce more energy than they use.
7. PM Modi envisions ‘Mission LIFE’ – Lifestyle For the Environment
Mission LiFE hopes that everyone on Earth will contribute individually to the fight against climate change.

8. COP27 announces a dedicated youth space for the first time
For the first time, children and youth will have an official space at the UN climate change conference in Egypt next month. The newly announced Children and Youth Pavilion will enable young people to hold discussions and policy briefings in the Blue Zone – the inner, UN-managed space which hosts the global negotiations. COP27 is held in Africa, where 70% of the population is under the age of 30.
9. China will build the world’s largest wind farm
The huge facility in the Taiwan Strait, planned by the city of Chaozhou in China’s Guangdong province, could power 13 million homes, or the equivalent of Norway. Because of the windy location, the turbines will be able to run between 43-49% of the time. Work on the project will start in the next three years, and China hopes to generate a third of its electricity from renewables by 2025.
10. Researchers discover a method to generate hydrogen from water
The team at the National University of Singapore has discovered that light can trigger a mechanism of water electrolysis which could improve the affordability of hydrogen as a source of clean energy.
11. 100 UK universities pledged to divest from fossil fuels
After successful campaigning by People and Planet’s Fossil Free campaign, this move equates to 65% of the country’s higher education institutions who will now refuse to make investments in fossil fuel companies. moving £17.6 billion out of reach of the corporations. Some of the biggest universities signing the pledge are the University of Edinburgh, Oxford and Cambridge.
12. Indonesian program pays fishers to collect plastic trash at sea
Each fisherman will receive the equivalent of $10 per week for collecting up to nine lbs of plastics. This initiative is part of the country’s efforts to reduce marine plastic pollution by 70% by 2025.
13. UN countries adopt ‘aspirational’ net-zero goal for aviation
Nearly 200 countries pledged to cut carbon emissions from commercial aviation, making it the world’s most ambitious pledge to regulate emissions from international air travel.
14. HSBC adverts banned after greenwashing complaints
The UK’s Advertising Standards Authority has banned a series of sustainability focused ads from HSBC bank because of their misleading environmental claims, making it the first time the watchdog has regulated a bank on green-washing claims.
15. EU will ban new combustion engine cars by 2035
The EU has reached a deal requiring car manufacturers to sell only zero-emission vehicles from 2035. Diesel and petrol cars will not be registered after 2035.
